Just after arriving in Bangkok for three years, someone told me about this site with a lot of great tips and advices. The restaurant Spring has become our old time favorite! No problems getting there because the taxi driver took us straight there the first time. Surely, we would have never known about this place if it was not mentioned here. And the ‘too expensive’ and ‘discount please’ in Thai worked very well at Chatuchak Weekend Market; I got a some good bargains. Great site, my compliments!

The Grand Palace with the Royal Temple (Wat Phra Kaew) was built in 1782 and was completed in time for the coronation of Rama I around 1785. Thai Kings stopped living in the palace full time around the turn of the twentieth century. The Royal Temple, home of the Emerald Buddha, is still the spiritual heart of the nation. The Emerald Buddha sits atop an 11-meter tall gilded altar, protected by a nine-tiered umbrella. It's a simply jade statue, but it is adorned with garments made of gold. There are three different sets of gold clothing, which are changed by the King in a ceremony at the changing of the seasons. Beware of touts working outside the palace area who tell you the palace is closed. Free guided tours in English are available at 10am, 10.30am, 1.30pm and 2pm. You can also rent an audio guide for B100 plus passport or credit card to secure return. The audience halls in the Grand Palace are open mon-fri, closed sat-sun. The Royal Pantheon in Temple of the Emerald Buddha is only open one day a year, on 6 April. Visitors must be properly dressed before being allowed. long pants/skirts and shirts with sleeves, no bare feet/shoulders. There is a booth near the entry that can provide clothes to cover you up properly. You must leave your passport or credit card as security.
